While Lansing, Michigan doesn't have views of the Great Lakes or Waterfalls, you can still make the best memories... I know because that's just what I did when my family came to town. We laughed while hunting for colorful murals, wandered through one of Michigan's oldest zoos, and ended the evening sharing dinner on a patio as the summer sun began to set.
If you're looking for an easy day trip in Lansing, here's an itinerary that's relaxed, affordable, and full of opportunities for photo ops.
Start Your Day Exploring Downtown Lansing's Murals
Downtown Lansing is filled with colorful murals tucked between buildings, along sidewalks, and in unexpected places. We spent the morning simply wandering and stopping whenever one caught our eye.
Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, we turned it into a scavenger hunt. Every mural became another excuse to laugh, take photos, and appreciate the creativity that brings so much personality to the city.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and don't be afraid to explore a few side streets. Some of the best artwork isn't on the main road.

Spend the Afternoon at Potter Park Zoo
After exploring downtown, we headed just a few minutes away to Potter Park Zoo, a local favorite that's easy to enjoy in a few hours.
The zoo is beautifully landscaped and shaded in many areas, making it especially pleasant during the summer months. Whether you're watching playful otters, towering giraffes, curious red pandas, or simply enjoying the gardens between exhibits, there's something calming about slowing your pace and observing the animals.
It reminded me how often we rush through life without really noticing what's around us.
One of the things I love most about visiting a zoo is that it naturally encourages curiosity—the same kind of curiosity that inspires so many pages in my journal.
Helpful Tip: Visit earlier in the day during summer for cooler temperatures and more active animals.
End the Day at Lansing Brewing Company
After spending the day outside, we were ready for dinner.
We chose Lansing Brewing Company, located in the heart of downtown.
The atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It was the perfect place to sit, talk about our favorite moments from the day, and enjoy a good meal before heading home.
One of my favorite parts of traveling—whether I'm hundreds of miles away or just exploring my own city—is slowing down long enough to enjoy a meal together. Somehow conversations always seem a little richer after a day spent making memories.
Why I Loved This Day
People often assume adventures have to be expensive or far from home.
I don't believe that.
This entire day reminded me that meaningful adventures are usually built from simple moments.
A colorful mural.
An unexpected animal encounter.
A shared meal.
A few silly selfies.
Those are the moments I find myself writing about later.
They're also the moments I never want to forget.
