When we first arrived in Virginia Beach, I’ll be honest — we were a little disappointed. Traveling with dogs, we quickly realized that most of the beach access we’d imagined wasn’t going to be an option for us. But then we discovered First Landing State Park, and the mood quickly changed. What started as a workaround became one of the most relaxing, dog-friendly beach experiences we’ve had — and the place that truly defined our trip.

A Beach Where Dogs Are Welcome
At First Landing State Park, dogs are allowed on the beach as long as they’re on a leash, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and respectful. Our dogs were able to walk along the shoreline, splash in the water, sniff the sand, and fully enjoy the experience — and honestly, watching them enjoy it made the whole day better.
The beach itself feels quieter and more natural than the main Virginia Beach strip. There’s less noise, fewer crowds, and more room to spread out, which makes it perfect for slow walks and long pauses by the water.

Instead of boardwalks and busy streets, you’ll find wide stretches of sand, calm water, and sand dunes. It feels less like a tourist destination and more like a place where nature is still in charge.
June was a beautiful time to visit. The weather was warm without being overwhelming, the water was inviting, and everything felt alive — birds overhead, waves rolling in, and the steady rhythm of footsteps in the sand.
Trails, Trees, and Quiet Hikes

Beyond the beach, First Landing State Park has an extensive trail system (over 20 miles) that we loved exploring. The trails wind through maritime forest, shaded paths, and sandy stretches that feel completely removed from the nearby city. I love the cypress trees!
The trails were well-marked and easy to navigate, making them a great option whether you’re looking for a short walk or a longer wander.
The dogs enjoyed this part just as much — plenty of new smells, shaded areas to cool down, and a peaceful pace that encouraged lingering rather than rushing.
If you’re visiting Virginia Beach and looking for a more relaxed, dog-friendly experience — or if you just need a break from crowds — First Landing State Park is absolutely worth making time for.
