Some of the best Colorado adventures don’t require a full weekend or complicated planning—just an early start, a good pair of shoes, and a willingness to follow the road where it leads.

This one-day loop from the Denver area took me and my daughter from the rocky hills of St. Mary’s Glacier to the quiet forest trails of Georgetown, with mountain views, wildlife sightings, and plenty of moments to pause along the way. It’s an ideal day trip if you’re craving fresh air, easy hikes, and a scenic drive without overdoing it.
Stop One: St. Mary’s Glacier (Idaho Springs)

We started the day at St. Mary’s Glacier, an easy and incredibly rewarding hike just outside of Idaho Springs. The trail climbs a rocky hillside and opens up to a stunning alpine lake backed by mountain views—one of those places that feels dramatic without requiring a long or technical hike.

Helpful tips:
-
Go early in the morning if you can
-
The small trailhead parking lot fills up quickly
-
Expect crowds later in the day, especially on weekends
Once at the top, the large rocks overlooking the water make the perfect spot to sit, breathe, and take it all in. This is a great place to slow down, do a little grounding, and enjoy the stillness before the trail gets busy.

We also heard about a famous nearby landmark called “Pig Rock,” a popular selfie spot, though we didn’t spot it ourselves. It’s worth keeping an eye out if you enjoy those little local quirks that give a place personality.
Why it’s special:
St. Mary’s Glacier offers big Colorado scenery with minimal effort—perfect for easing into a day of exploration.
Scenic Drive: Guanella Pass Road in Georgetown
After leaving St. Mary’s Glacier, we drove to Georgetown and hopped on Guanella Pass Road which became part of the adventure itself. This winding mountain road offers breathtaking overlook views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, making it worth taking slow and pulling over when safe.
It’s the kind of drive that reminds you not to rush—Colorado does the heavy lifting here.
Stop Two: Silverdale Trailhead (Georgetown)
Our second hike brought us to Silverdale Trailhead just outside of Georgetown. There are multiple trail options in the area, but we chose the Railbed Trail, an easy, mostly flat hike that follows a peaceful creek through the forest.

Along the trail, we came across:
-
Old railway remnants and a former station site
-
Teepee-style formations made from sticks (a fun and unexpected sight)
-
Flowing creek and shaded paths
This trail felt quiet and exploratory rather than dramatic—a perfect contrast to the morning’s rocky climb.

Even before we started hiking, we were treated to a surprise: bighorn sheep right in the parking lot. Seeing them up close set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

Why it’s special:
Silverdale Trailhead is relaxed, accessible, and full of small discoveries—ideal for an easy afternoon hike.
Wrap-Up: Eat in Georgetown
After hiking, I suggest heading into Georgetown for food - it’s absolutely worth planning a meal stop here. The town has several great local dining options and a charming, old town walkable feel that makes it easy to unwind after a day outdoors.

Whether you’re craving something casual or want to sit down and linger, Georgetown is the perfect place to end the loop before heading back toward Denver.
