A Perfect Orlando Florida Day Trip for Those Craving more than Crowds and Concrete: Wekiwa Springs

A Perfect Orlando Florida Day Trip for Those Craving more than Crowds and Concrete: Wekiwa Springs

When most people think of Orlando, they think of theme parks.
I tend to think a little differently.

Whenever I travel, I’m always on the lookout for nature, fresh air, and small adventures—the kind that feel grounding and memorable. On this particular mid-January day, I found all of that just outside the city on a spontaneous day trip that turned out to be absolutely perfect.

Morning Adventure at Wekiwa Springs State Park

Just a short drive from Orlando, Wekiwa Springs State Park feels like stepping into another world. With miles of trails and the crystal-clear water of the Spring, it’s an easy choice if you’re craving something beyond crowds and concrete.

The weather couldn’t have been better — 82 degrees in mid-January, sunny but not overwhelming (and low humidity). We explored several trails and chose the one leading to the lake, winding through classic Florida landscapes. While Wekiwa is known for wildlife sightings, we didn’t spot any alligators on this visit — which honestly made for a very relaxed hike. Though I did see a red tailed hawk!

After the trails, we saved the best for last.

A Dip in Turquoise Bliss

The spring itself is breathtaking.
An incredible range of turquoise and blue hues, cool and refreshing, and the perfect reward after a hike. Slipping into the water felt like nature’s version of a reset button — calm, clear, and deeply refreshing.

Before leaving, I popped into the small park store (because of course I did). Stickers and postcards came home with me, ready to be tucked into the pages of a Pen Pal Adventure Book.

Quick note: We arrived to an almost empty parking lot, which is shocking for a Florida Spring! But, I suggest you go early because in the past when I have visited any of the springs, there is typically a long line of cars waiting to enter and finding a parking spot is always a challenge.

Another important note: Reservations are now REQUIRED in advance. You have to pay the $6 car fee and reserve your spot prior to your visit. https://www.floridastateparks.org/learn/day-use-entry-reservation-information

A Surprise Lunch Stop in Altamonte Springs

On the way back to Orlando, we stopped in Uptown Altamonte for lunch — and stumbled upon what may have been the best surprise of the entire day: Seasons 52.

This place instantly won me over.

Seasons 52 offers:

  • A regular menu

  • Vegetarian and vegan menu

  • A gluten-free menu

Marked items are seasonal, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared, with locally grown vegetables. The yellow beet salad was so good I talked about it for days. Truly mouth-watering.

I later discovered there’s another Seasons 52 just a couple miles from Hilton Parc Soleil, where I stayed — something I didn’t find out until just before leaving town. (Next time!)

And a bonus tip for fellow travelers: if you’re a Hilton Grand Vacations owner like me, you can grab your discount at Seasons 52 in Orlando, just ask for the discount card at the desk.

Why This Day Trip Worked So Well

Florida has over 1,000 springs, Wekiwa Springs is one of the closest drives from Orlando. That makes it a fantastic option if you’re looking for a day trip that doesn’t involve too much driving.

For me, this day perfectly captured what travel is really about:

  • Getting outside

  • Slowing down

  • Discovering places you didn’t plan for

  • And collecting small moments worth remembering

If you’re visiting Orlando and craving something more grounded, natural, and nature filled — this is your sign to skip the parks for a day and follow the trail instead.
