Unforgettable Seashore Stroll along the Cliff's of Rhode Island

A Day Trip That Belongs in Every Pen Pal Adventure Book

Let’s be honest — all of Rhode Island is ridiculously picturesque, and this small-but-mighty state absolutely deserves a spot on your bucket list (and in your Pen Pal Adventure Book). But if you’re heading anywhere near Newport, there is one experience that simply cannot be missed.

Cliff Walk Newport Rhode Island

The Cliff Walk.

When I lived in Milford, Connecticut, and my daughter came to visit, we planned a simple day trip to Newport with one goal in mind: finally experience the Cliff Walk together. Exhilarated doesn’t even begin to describe it. From the moment we arrived until the moment we reluctantly turned back, every curve in the path revealed something new — crashing waves, sweeping ocean views, historic mansions, and endless photo-worthy moments.

The Cliff Walk is a public walkway that stretches along the eastern shoreline of Newport, blending raw coastal beauty with Gilded Age elegance. On one side, you have the Atlantic Ocean pounding dramatically against massive rocks below. On the other, you pass the backs of some of the most iconic mansions in New England — homes that feel straight out of another era.

Walking out onto the huge shoreline rocks, feeling the salt air, and watching the waves crash with intensity is something you feel in your chest. There’s a powerful energy there — grounding, humbling, and invigorating all at once. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying.

And yes — everyone takes photos in the tunnel. You will too. It’s practically a rite of passage.

As if the views weren’t enough, we also spotted Taylor Swift’s Newport home, which sent us (proud Swifties) into a whole new level of excitement. It’s one of those fun little moments that makes the walk feel personal and memorable in a different way.

We couldn’t stay as long as we wanted — the pups were waiting for us back in Milford — but even a shorter visit left a lasting impression. If (and when) I get the chance to go back, here are a few takeaways I’d keep in mind — and recommend to anyone planning their own visit:

Cliff Walk Tips to Know Before You Go:

  • Go early. The earlier you arrive, the quieter and more magical it feels.

  • Bring sunscreen and water. Even on breezy days, the sun reflects off the water.

  • Download a map and plan your route. Some sections are smoother, others more rugged.

  • Wear good walking shoes. Parts of the path are uneven and rocky.

  • Consider staying overnight in Newport. One day barely scratches the surface — there are too many great restaurants, shops, and coastal views to rush through.

The Cliff Walk is the kind of place that invites reflection. It’s not just about walking from point A to point B — it’s about noticing details, collecting moments, and letting the scenery sink in. Exactly the kind of experience that belongs on the pages of a travel journal or shared through a Pen Pal Adventure Book.

Some adventures stay with you long after you leave — the Cliff Walk is absolutely one of them.
